Blaze at crime scene ‘suspicious’

Tribune Chronicle
POSTED: July 6, 2008

VERNON - A fire that destroyed the garage where a township woman was found beaten to death just days after that crime has been ruled suspicious, a fire investigator said Saturday.

The fire late Thursday destroyed the garage at 4918 Bushnell Campbell Road where Tricia Wade, 31, was found June 27 bludgeoned to death. Her boyfriend, Nathan A. Riggs, 26, is being held in the murder.

Saturday Vernon Township fire Chief Lawrence Foltz said no one has been living at the home since the murder. Now investigators from the Trumbull County Sheriffs Office, the state Fire Marshal's Office and his department are looking into the cause of the blaze.

The fire gutted the garage, which was unattached to the mobile home at the address. Yellow crime scene tape surrounded blocked off the garage after the fire which came the same day a Trumbull County Grand Jury indicted Riggs on charges of aggravated murder and gross abuse of a corpse.

Deputies arrived about 4 a.m. June 27 after Riggs and his mother called 911 to report the murder. Wade's four children were home at the time but are not considered eyewitnesses to the crime, deputies said.

Riggs remains in Trumbull County Jail in lieu of a $2 million bond where he has been since his June 27 arrest.

Prosecutors said the corpse abuse accusation pertains to Riggs' claim that after Wade was dead, he drank a beer, poured some on her and hit her again.

Riggs told a 911 dispatcher that he killed her with a crowbar.

I Personally WISHED that WHOLE PLACE to BURN to the Ground, not just the Garage!!! That trailer, garage and land are a pit of*****and have been for generations now. If you have any kind of brain cell activity, get a proper education or join the military and get out of that decrepit area.

That area is full of Drugs (and Highly STUPID PPL who use Drugs), Booz Hounds (Drunks), and absolutely no moral code.

Their Grandmother Miller is the sanest one of the bunch!! I (actually my family and I) love her more than she realizes. I am so proud that She left that **** Hole area (too bad the kids did not follow) and gave her money to her kids and grandchildren. Unlike some others, she is not on Prescription Meds mixed with alcohol.... oh the only way to cope with life; UNSTABLE is what that is! We support her and her goal for the grandchildren. We will be there for them at the drop of a dime.

Those four beautiful children need to be with their family members who are NOT Drunks, who are not, nor have been incarcerated for foolish stunts (especially when related to drugs, WHAT A GREAT ROLE MODEL), have and still travel the world, have good educations and can provide more than minimum wage, welfare and food stamps to live on. So the cycle continues! ON and ON! There is more to life than rolling dope, drinking cheap beer and tipping cows!

The*****that Nathan went through is no excuse. I had a terrible childhood, and also suffer from an oxygen deficiency, but I will not kill my spouse or abuse my child. He is not insane, just severely stupid!!!!! He deserves to sit in prison and think for the rest of his life, not be medicated in a facility. As he said, if I can do the crime, I can do the time. He doesn't know right from wrong? ********.

(cont)she was a single parent. Then her our Father(mine to)became ill with cancer and died when Tricia and Joey were children(Kathy took that pretty hard because she was Daddy's first girl). Then she met the love of her life and seemed to do well for a while, that is until he had an ATV accident and was killed.SO from there on out Kathy has been dealt a pretty sh!tty hand if you ask me..Now her only daughter(moms give your daughter's an extra hug and kiss today because they could be gone tomorrow)was bludgently murdered by a man who will more than likely get away with it because his childhood was not so great either(so i'm reading).SO you see folks it's a continuous circle that will never stop,,so please have some mercy on my sister she has ALWAYS been an amazing sister to me..

Oh yeah,I forgot about Richard,It seems to me that you are very close to Nathan and seem to keep making excuses trying to justify for what he did.My suggestion to you is that you go back to school and get a proper education(they offer free GED classes @ your local library)then maybe it sounds to me like you would make a great defense lawyer. As far as the fire goes, who gives a sh!t,it's done it's over with and there is no way to obviously get it back.So I suggest we all get on with our lives and focus on our families and be greatful for everything we have ,including the AIR we breath every second.Everyone had something interesting to say.Lastly My Big Sissy (Tricia's mom)Yes she has had some problems with her life,I grant you that,My sister has had some mishaps with her life, her parents divorced when she was a child(which was looked down upon back then)so she succumbed to depression at an early age. Then she married Joe Wade and had 2 children & that didn't work out then for a while

Well,*lol* @ truth seeker..first and foremost,Aunt wanda, Except for the first 3 sentences(to which i did not know Nathan) I couldn't agree with you more.Hartford, teachers are trained professionals with a degree to notice "red flags", something was obviously wrong with Nathan.Fromwhat I am reading , Nathan suffered from when he was a child with abuse/drugs/alcohol,and did not know any other kind of lifestyle,I am not defending him in anyway, because God gives us all free will and the ability to be taught right from left.He definetly deserves what he'll get.Carebear,my sister has been trying to say all along what you have just said.Daisy,Please don't worry about the children reading this,i can assure you all these blogs will be off the internet before they get a chance to read them.Enough, your absolutely right, counseling,LOVE,and positive influences are exactly what they need from now on through the rest of there lives,(so let's all start now).

Nathan is in jail and is not going to be getting out, not any time soon at least. Obviously so many people know nothing about mental illness and addiction or about the childhood that Nathan had which is most likely why he is the way he is. There is no excuse for what he did and he will face the consequences for his actions. I have no doubt that after the drugs and alcohol wore off and he was able to actually see what he had done- Nathan was remorseful. When someone who was abused as a child, has someone physically and verbally abusing them, it doesn't take much to make them snap. Why would someone want to put their children through that day in and day out anyway? What kind of future are they going to have having experienced suicide, murder, abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, these children will need so much counseling, love and positive influence in their lives, not a family and/or father to continue to influence that lifestyle.

Nathan can't read or write remember(ya right) he helped watch tricias kids and helped them with homework but cant read or write? come on he knew what he was doin and what hes doing now, hes a piece of **** and really needs to be locked up forever, no person shall be placed back into society that has murdered someone, my heart goes out to the kids, those children are awesome and dont hyave a mommy because nathan did what he did and did it because he "couldn't take it anymore" someone who is insane can't feel remorse and he did when he talked to 911 dibatch.

people need to quit judging all the family, including the ones on the fathers side, he loves his kids very much, he is a good dad he just got messed up with the wrong people, he has wrote all four of his kids sense he has been in prison. and he is very very distraught over all this. the kids love him very much too. no one is prefect!!!

Most of you people posting comments on here are positively heartless people. Saying terrible things about the families. How many of you actually know the families, like you think? Stop posting ignorant and hurtful things. The children who are scarred for life may get on here and read this crap you are writing. That is really going to help them, bad mouthing their family. God bless those kids, and anyone who is willing to step up and help them through this trying time. Try posting a positive message to them. That would be more appropriate, don't you think?

Ya know what, "enough" said it exactly right, they had a history of drug and alcohol abuse.. That is the MAIN reason why I remember Nathan.. is because of his drug issue. If he wasn't happy he should have just left her. She did NOT get what she deserved.. and I wish that they would give him the death penalty, because that is what he deserves.. I dont care if he couldn't read or write.. you know what that tells me, that his family didn't care enough to try to help him with his problems.. which means they also have problems and couldn't take care of their own kids, because if they could he might have at least a highschool education instead of an education of a 4 year old.

auntwanda, schools (public or private) do not diagnose mental illness--that's not their job. Diagnosing illnesses is the job of medical professionals not teachers. Plus, Nathan has been out of school for over 8 years. Unfortunately you have to have someone recognize that something is not "right" and then seek help. Even a parent cannot control whether his or her adult child seeks medical care for a mental illness.

Plus, richard, until there is an arrest and a person is charged with a crime such as arson, I don't think we should legally say or write that a person is responsible under libel and slander laws.
