Dems pull endorsement

Party denounces Dann; area official casts only ‘no’ vote

Staff, wire reports
POSTED: May 11, 2008

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Democratic Party no longer considers scandal-plagued Attorney General Marc Dann one of its own, formally voting Saturday to strip an officeholder of his endorsement for the first time in the organization’s history.

Members of the state party’s executive committee moved quickly with a voice vote after little discussion. Only one member of the roughly 150-member committee voiced a ‘‘no,’’ and no one spoke in defense of the attorney general.

Dorothy McLaughlin of Mahoning County offered the sole support for Dann during Saturday’s discussion and said he had done nothing to warrant the party’s action Saturday.

‘‘As far as I’m concerned he’s always been a nice guy, wonderful family and everything,’’ said McLaughlin, a Democrat for 60 years. ‘‘And he has done a good job. You tell me what he has done wrong in terms of working for us. I don’t see anything. I have done a lot of research.’’

State leaders of both parties have been pressing Dann to resign for almost a week. Dann admitted on May 2 to an affair with a subordinate that he said contributed to an atmosphere leading to sexual harassment claims against a top aide in his office.

Three of his aides were forced out of their jobs. Another resigned.

Dann has refused to resign, even as both Republicans and Democrats in the Ohio House are considering impeachment.

‘‘One of Marc’s strengths a year-and-a-half ago was his stubbornness,’’ said Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern after the vote Saturday. ‘‘Now it becomes increasingly evident that it’s a weakness.’’

Dann did not attend the public meeting Saturday.

‘‘The attorney general completely understands why they’re disappointed and that’s why he’s working everyday to earn back their trust,’’ said Dann spokesman Jason Stanford.

Gov. Ted Strickland and other top Democrats told Dann in a May 4 letter that the House would immediately move to impeach him if he did not resign.

Dorothy McLaughlin also called Strickland a ‘‘wonderful’’ governor but said he had overreacted to Dann’s situation.

Lawmakers have struggled throughout the past week to pinpoint offenses that may be impeachable. House Speaker Jon Husted, a Kettering Republican, first suggested that Dann appoint an independent investigator to help the House in its fact-finding efforts.

But Husted and Senate President Bill Harris, a Republican from Ashland, agreed Friday to pass legislation authorizing Ohio’s inspector general to investigate the attorney general’s office.

The Democratic Party’s actions Saturday represented the first formal sanctions against Dann.

‘‘The party obviously felt obliged to go on the record with a strong statement of their view of the situation,’’ said Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray.

Dann can still consider himself a Democrat, but Redfern said the party’s move to take away his 2006 endorsement essentially forces the attorney general to be an independent or an unendorsed Democrat. Should Dann survive in office and choose to run for re-election, the state party will actively work against him, Redfern said.

State Rep. Bob Hagan, D-Youngstown, is also an executive committee member. He was not able to attend the meeting and said he did not want to comment because he did not see the resolution. Ohio Rep. Thomas Letson, D-Warren, did not return phone messages. Hagan said he did not expect that Letson attended the meeting in Columbus on Saturday because his mother, Maude Jeffers Letson, died on Friday.

Dshweck, I was talking about a particular female (Stankoski) that is old enough to know better then to get intoxicated and crawl into a man's bed that she doesn't intend to have sex with!Especially one that she knows wants in her pants. It is a matter of personal responsiblity. In saying so I'm not excusing Anthony's conduct. He is getting his due. He's an old idiot trying to be something he never has..."a lady's man."

I have respect for ALL Lady's but none for any female that drinks to the point they become incoherent (Gill)or so drunk they don't know if they undone their own pants or someone else did (Stankoski!)

JFK is a Catholic school so "Assumption"High works.Although I have been to many JFK football games and I guess "Consumption" High might work as well!?Hmm?

Handala;Read your own post. They speak volumes on your views on how it is OK for a man to have his way with a woman(a pig in your words)who drinks.JFK is by no stretch "Assumtion" high.

CAT,

There is nothing to prove. He admitted his guilt publicly. He has pleaded guilty.

" Dann admitted on May 2 to an affair with a subordinate that he said contributed to an atmosphere leading to sexual harassment claims against a top aide in his office."

IT IS NOW TIME TO SENTENCE HIM.

The verdict: His is the hypocrite that he claims himself to be.

NOW GET HIM OUT OF OFFICE!!!!!!!

the longer they stall throwing him out the better the chances he has of a good cover up ,looks like to me that some thing is starting to stink in columbus, years ago he would have been tarred and feathered and thrown out of the country by the constituents who voted for him ......

The statewide Democrats have thrown Dann under the bus because they've worked too hard getting back into power to let some love starved upstart from Youngstown ruin their comeback. The Republicans and the Democrats calling for impeachment are setting a precedent that may come back to haunt both parties. My humble review of the Ohio Constitution suggests insufficient evidence for impeachment. If he is successfully impeached the standard for public officials will have to be raised to a new level - which may or may not be a good thing.

I don't think Alli was fired for being black.Dann knew he was black when he appointed him.Besides if it was a case of racial discrimination Alli would have been filing with the EEOC quicker than Stankoski could have gotten her pants buttoned!I think Anthony got fired for TRYING to "double dip."

"Dong in the cookie jar!?""Preying on young hot females working UNDER him!?"What a sad commentary!Hmm?

Dann has done nothing the other politicians have not done!! He is this years scape goat!! ands committed no impeachable offense! He has never claimed to be perfect. But he is the man we elected to be AG!! He is quite capable of doing his job as he has all along! As Mclaughlin stated--they are OVER RE-ACTING. Why is every one so quick to condem him, even the common criminal is presumed innocent until proven quilty!! When they try to impeach him- the facts will come out! He has not committed an impeachable offense! I have to ask-why are they trying so hard to get rid of him--who is trying to profit from this "impeachment"? Wake up--There is something under lying here we are not aware of!! Or he would have gotten the usuall slap on the wrist by the Gov.!!

What Marc Dann has done is nothing new, most politicians prey upon the young hot females working under them. Marc Dann simply got caught with his dong in the cookie jar, I'm sure he can effectively do his job but now everyone has to pretend to disown him. If not those defending him will face voter wrath! Rick Alli got fired so quickly for being black, not because he had committed the crime of double dipping. Further investigation proved he did no wrong.

I think the reason Alli didn't get a second chance is because he (Alli) refused the forbidden fruit...PIZZA!Hmm?

I believe the reason the Ceaser's wife is "beyond reproach" is because any BigDaddy caught messing with his woman would be hog gutted and quartered before he could get his Toga up!Not because of her righteousness!

Do you think Rome fell because of a "double standard?"

Your preaching to the choir on this point.I guess that's why in Psalms 118:8 were told to put OUR faith in the Lord...not man!Hmm?

Alli did not get a second chance, Mark Dann had one of his cronies get rid of him like a dog,Alli has much more common sense than Mark ever will, perhaps a role reversal would be justified Dann must go away and we should draft Alli,,,,,we should aLL decend on columbus and have a massive protest and drag him out of his office forcefully if need bevery dastardly attitude and in total denial Mark Dann why don't you go away,,,,be a man .......................just stop and think for a moment is this the type of man we want in columbus?? comparable to letting the fox in the hen house

It's hard to think that Dann can be effective as AG. How can he "pull the twig out of someone's eye when he has a log in his own?"

If Caesar's wife is to be "beyond reproach" than shouldn't Caesar be too?

Your "double standard" is what gets the "Valley" into trouble, time and time again.

Isn't it sort of like the preacher in the pulpit talking about sin and then committing adultery? Not going to be able to get the message across that he's for ending sin or in Marc's case, corruption, "pay to play" and "cronyism".

Marc, Consider yourself an Independent now not affiliated to any political party. You will find that most people are actually Independents but must declare a party to vote in the primaries. I believe in giving people second chances. There are those who have done much far worse but never got caught or exposed. You cleaned up corruption in Ohio by the Republicans. Now finish the job by exposing the corruption by the Democrats. You did promise to clean up corruption in Ohio and that is why you were elected. Redeem yourself Marc and finish the job that you were elected to do. Time for you to clean up the corruption by Democrats in Ohio. If you do that, you will win the confidence of all the people in Ohio and go on to win a second term. Go after the crooked Democrats and expose them for what they really are. Clean up ALL of Ohio.
