Howland voters defeat school bond
HOWLAND — Township voters Nov. 4 decided they didn’t want to pay for a new high school. After more than two years of planning, a $43.7 million bond issue meant to pay for the school, an auditorium and renovations at other buildings in the district was defeated 57 percent to 42 percent. Despite the defeat, school officials last week said the bond was worth the time and effort and they’ll turn to voters to decide how to address what Superintendent John Sheets described as still under-performing buildings. “It was a huge undertaking and there was a lot of cooperation from a lot of concerned citizens,” said Bob Nemeth, levy committee co-chair. “It was a great experience amongst all of us together.” The district has been looking at the option for years and building assessments were completed earlier this year grading the high school as “poor.
