New school construction under way
HUBBARD — Construction of the new $57 million central Hubbard Schools campus kicked off Sunday when students in grades K-12 turned over dirt using shiny silver shovels. “Having new schools will be great,” said fifth-grade student Ashley Cunningham. “They will be cleaner, and we’ll have new equipment like desks and chairs.” School board president Dr. Benjamin Hayek thanked those in attendance, and thanked the voters of Hubbard for their sacrifice in passing the 5.5-mill bond issue that will pay for the local costs of construction. “We realize education is the key to the future of this community and our nation,” Hayek said. The 5.5-mill bond issue will raise $18.6 million to match the state grant of $36.9 million for the building program. The new high school will be south of the current high school, and the elementary school will be west of the Hubbard swimming pool, according to the plans. The pool and auditorium will remain on the site and be refurbished to fit the plan.
