2008 was year to remember and forget
It's been a memorable year for area sports — some choose to remember, while others choose to forget. Either way, it’s been a heckuva 2008 for those in the Mahoning Valley. Let’s count down some of the best from 10 to one: 10. Warren G. Harding senior Sheldon Brogdon makes a verbal commitment to Youngstown State University men’s basketball team on Dec. 14. Sure, an uninformed few would dismiss this as a footnote, or just mentioned as a brief. However, this commitment is very significant not only for YSU, but to basketball in the area. There hasn’t been an area player of this magnitude to commit to the Penguins for quite a while. As Harding coach Steve Arnold said that day it could be a renaissance of the Penguins’ program — a program which was last successful on a consistent basis in the mid-1980s. YSU has desperately tried through numerous coaches and different recruiting tactics to bring a semblance of consistency to the program.

There are no comparisons to be made, no quick-witted antidotes. It’s a program that has been in disarray for more than two decades — the Youngstown State University men’s basketball program.
Some have called the program “pathetic.
Former Harding players coming back to area
Steve Arnold is busy coaching the Warren G. Harding Raiders boys basketball team these days, but he enjoys listening to the exploits of his former players on the collegiate level.

YSU teams have reason for some hype
About this time every year I find the yellow and orangish VHS case, look and see if the videotape is still in there.
The title reads “Hoosiers.” It’s an annual ritual to get every ounce of me focused on the upcoming basketball season.
