Area farmers prepare for 2009

Farmers across our area, looking ahead to the new year, are eyeing the situation with a degree of pessimism and a whole bunch of questions. And they are faced with making many difficult and complex decisions. In 2008, they spent a lot of money in the spring buying high-priced fertilizer, chemicals and seed, banking on good fall harvest prices that would return a reasonable profit. But it didn’t work out that way. Prices for corn, soybeans and wheat dropped this summer and fell to about 50 percent or less of what they were at planting time. So, for good reason, they look ahead wondering just what 2009 will bring. Several farmers have told me they are waiting to buy their fertilizer for the spring planting season. Dan Keep, agronomist for Western Farm Cooperative, a major farm supplier, bears that out. In fact, he says his company is suggesting farmers wait awhile before locking in fertilizer for next year because prices are going down.
