Deciphering the "facts"
Thu, July 3, 2008 @ 1:34PM
Somewhere I read that cinnamon was one of the superfoods. I wrote a blog a few weeks ago based on a book that listed 10 superfoods and cinnamon was not on that list, and I really don’t know where I read about cinnamon, although it was likely on an Internet site somewhere. First of all, I’m not sure that we even need to be worrying about superfoods in the first place. As long as we are getting a balanced amount of all of the food groups, which are grains, meat and beans, vegetables, fruits, healthy oils and dairy, then I don’t see what the big deal is about. There are about as many different types of healthy food methods out there as there are healthy foods to eat. We are omnivores, which mean we can eat a wide variety of things, and we should, in order to take advantage of all of the nutrients we need. But there is more to it than that.

Rats leaving the ship
Fri, July 4, 2008 @ 3:32PM
Even though I was on vacation, it was hard not to miss the signs that the Youngstown SteelHounds may be closing up shop for a year. News recently has the GM leaving for a similar post in the AHL and the head coach leaving for a job in Mississippi with a team in the same league as the `Hounds, it is clear that they do not think there will be a season in '08-09. And if anyone should know, it's the coach and GM, the two most important personnel in any franchise because of their work in player acquistion. I thought SMG would throw their weight around and help the `Hounds and the city out, because having a team use the building gives it an anchor tenant, and it will be a chore to scramble and fill at least 32 dates (don't mention basketball: If this Valley has shown anything, it has been that minor league basketball has been a disaster in recent years.

A3 deserves three As for HOB show
Thu, July 3, 2008 @ 12:38PM
Most acts known primarily for one song usually save it for the end of the set. The thinking is that it’s the only way to deliver that emotional peak the finale needs. At the House of Blues Wednesday, Alabama 3 opened with “Woke Up This Morning,” the theme song from “The Sopranos” and the closest thing to a hit the UK band has had on these shores. The attitude seemed to be, “We’ll start you at the peak, and take you higher from there.” A3 has a near-legendary reputation as a live act in Europe, and the group proved it wasn’t just hype on the second date of a brief U.S. tour, its first in seven years. The 90-minute set was dominated by songs from “Hits and Exit Wounds,” a compilation CD set for release in the U.S. on Tuesday. Larry Love would bend the mic stand and coil his body around it like a snake, enticing the audience with his husky croon. The Rev. D.

Just waiting
Wed, June 25, 2008 @ 11:49AM
There is no slower time of the year for reporters that cover the NFL than now. Minicamps have wrapped up and players are off on vacations. Most reportrs sandwich in much of their vacation time between early June and late July, when training camps open. The down time gives me a chance to start thinking about the upcoming season. Most teams have their 80-player rosters set, and with injured playes finishing up rehabs, all 32 teams are optimistic about the future. As I look into my crystal ball, here are a few things I think I see: I think the winner of the AFC North Division could have a 9-7 record. The AFC North faces the tough NFC East Division next season, which means games against Dallas, the New York Giants, Washington and Philadelphia. The AFC North isn't as strong as it was a few years ago, which might be proven in 2008. The Browns and Steelers will be looked at as the class of the AFC North, but both have issues.

Straight talking with McCain
Fri, June 27, 2008 @ 3:57PM
I got the opportunity to interview Sen. John McCain two years ago when he was in the Mahoning Valley campaigning for former Ohio Sen. Mike DeWine. After a session at Leo's in Howland, McCain commented on then-Gov. Bob Taft's approval rating, which was well under 20 percent. He ought to quit, McCain said. Today, McCain noted the equally low approval rating for Congress. During an interview on the Straight Talk Express campaign bus, I asked him if Congress should just resign. McCain laughed. He said an election is coming up and it would be up to the American people. He said he didn't recall why he had made the remark about Taft, but said, "Frankly, that was probably none of my business' and it was for the people of Ohio to decide. But McCain had a larger point. He said it is easy to explain the low approval rating for Congress. "Americans are tired of all this gridlock and fighting. They're tired of it," he said.

Who cares about A-Rod and Madonna?
Sat, July 5, 2008 @ 2:31AM
Unless you've sworn off cable television news shows or ESPN, you've probably heard about the biggest story in baseball these days. No, it's not the upcoming trade of Indians ace C.C. Sabathia. It's not the struggles of the New York Yankees. It's not the surging Tampa Bay Rays, either. The biggest story has to be the burgeoning (supposedly) relationship between Alex Rodriguez and Madonna. It has to be a big story because i won't seem to go away. This is another example of why I'm beginning to agree with those who feel the cable and tabloid news organizations pick and choose their stories - at least in part - to district us from things we ought to be concerned about. Why would I think that? Because I don't know anyone who cares at all about what is going on with A-Rod, Madonna, A-Rod's wife and Lenny Kravitz. And yet, this thing is news.

A wedding in Las Vegas
Sat, July 5, 2008 @ 10:11AM
I recently returned from a wedding trip in Las Vegas. Not my wedding. It was for Rick Pompeo and Cheryl Shinosky of Cortland. It was my first trip to Vegas, and it was pretty much everything people had told me to expect. I saw lots of gambling, many, many $100 bills flying around on the tables and the slots and a lot of people having a good time. It was hot and crowded, just like I expected. On Sunday it hit 111 degrees. The flight going out involved a miserable, five-hour layover in Milwaukee, but it didn't dampen the spirits, too much, of the group I was traveling with. The wedding was a nice one. The bride was beautiful and the groom was buff. Elvis was not involved. For some reason, I had anticipated a circus-like atmosphere but it was a civilized, honorable and dignified ceremony. An entire group from this area made the trek to witness the occasion. I am told there were about 70 people in attendance from all over the U.S.
